JWP to upgrade Canberra’s major wastewater treatment plant

The Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre (WQCC) will be upgraded to cater for growth and improve performance

Canberra’s major wastewater treatment facility is the Lower Molonglo WQCC. The original plant was built in the 1970s. By implementing continual improvements, a major upgrade to the capacity of the secondary treatment facilities has been successfully deferred to date. However, it is now recognised that augmentation is required in the form of dedicated anoxic tanks and additional clarifiers.

The recommended upgrade will enable the Lower Molonglo WQCC to:

  • cater for growth (at current rates) to about 2016
  • consistently and reliably produce high quality effluent, with the associated environmental benefits
  • reduce the risk of inadequate treatment performance, particularly in wet weather events
  • provide sufficient treatment capacity to meet current licence limits and some capacity to meet more stringent requirements in the future.
  • JWP has been engaged by ActewAGL to design and document the plant upgrade, provide support services during the construction phase of the project, and undertake process commissioning and operator training.
